bullet About the River City Rowing Club Junior Crew

  Club Overview
Operating under the auspices of the River City Rowing Club, the RCRC Juniors offer young people in 8th to 12th grade the opportunity to learn to row, then compete against teams from throughout the western United States. First year rowers are assigned to the RCRC Juniors Novice Team, while those with at least a year's experience row as members of the Varsity Team.  RCRC offers teens a safe environment in which fitness, self-discipline, teamwork and camaraderie are emphasized. Crew members get the opportunity to race against other junior teams at regattas around the state, including the 5700-meter Head of the Port  hosted by RCRC.  The team practices at the Port of Sacramento in West Sacramento, a well-protected body of water located close to downtown Sacramento. Practices are held from 4:30-6:30pm on weekdays and 8:00-10:30am on Saturdays. Novice rowers practice Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Varsity rowers practice an additional Friday.

2008-2009 Season Recap

The 2008-2009 season started with change in leadership on the parent level as well as a complete replacement of the coaching staff. The team saw many improvements both in terms of competitive success and program function. During the fall season, many athletes enjoyed wins at the Head of the American regatta and RCRC fall regatta. Both regattas featured RCRC novice crews for the first time in club history. The fall concluded with the Erg-A-Thon where the team raised nearly ten thousand dollars, the largest amount it has raised in many years. This especially impressive given the team used to be more than twice as large. After productive winter training, the team gained momentum across the spring season. The team saw early success in the small boat events and some strong performances by the novice women's crew before going south to enjoy the sun and competition of the San Diego Crew Classic regatta. The men's and women's varsity eights each had their best perfomances to date as well as the strongest results in recent history. The challenging early regattas prepared the team well for a strong showing in the Deep Water Dash, where the team took home gold in 13 of the 18 events entered, and was within one event of taking the team point title from a much larger Berkeley High crew. Nearly every athlete came home home with a gold medal, some athletes winning as many as three medals. The team continued the success at a league regatta in Oakland before preparing for the highly competitive Southwest regional championships. The team held its own against some of the fastest crews in the southwest region, the strongest in the country. In the women's single event, history was made as Sam Warren won the gold medal and qualified for the national championship regatta. She was the first athlete from River City ever to compete there. At the youth national championship, Sam raced phenominally well, leading to a silver medal performance. She continued racing in the summer to earn a spot on the U.S. Junior National Team, racing in the women's quad.
